U20’s Switzerland v England Report

2014-Valongo-logou20’s European Championships

Switzerland 3 – 4 England
(Half Time 0 – 3)

England had a solid start in control at all times in the first half.

In the tactical meeting I told the players to concentrate in the first 10 minutes to control the Swiss team’s operation in attack and then to play on the Swiss team errors. Through this tactic, we managed to score two goals in this period.

For the remainder of the first half England totally dominated the game, with Switzerland struggling to break us down resorting to nothing but long shots.

At half time, I spoke to the players explaining that the 3 – 0 lead that we held would probably not be enough as the Swiss team’s competitiveness and fitness will show towards the end of the game.

In the second half we still controlled the game adding one more goal until the last 7 minutes, where we found it very hard to stop the pressure of the Swiss team having one big player in front of the goal all the time.

This was expected by me and although they scored three goals, England maintained the belief that we could win the game.

I have to say that I am very disappointed with the refereeing, while the German referee was very consistent, I felt the Italian referee was very inconsistent with judgement of team faults and discipline decisions which was obvious for the last 7 minutes. This did not help us contain Switzerland particularly when we conceded our last goal with one of their players laying on our goalkeeper.
The standard of the competition this year is extremely high with our team competing against semi-professional players in every game.

Today we will play Italy in the quarters-final and my objective is to rotate the team to ensure that we can be strong for the last 2 games.

Goal Scorers:

  • Alex Mount (2)
  • Alex Jones
  • Scott Neville

Players Comments

Scott Neville made the following comments:

Great game, I felt we controlled most of the game, I believe we showed that we are closing the gap, however we did loose control towards the end of the game mainly through tiredness.

Nicolas Pembrey made the following comments:

It was an impressive team performance, very pleasing after 12-1 lost to Spain. Really tense last 5 minutes.
